The United States, or U.S., is a country located in North America. It contains 50 states, 5 unincorporated territories, and over 320 Indian reservations. It is the third-largest country in the world and shares borders with Canada to the north as well as Mexico to the South. The United States officially became a country on July 4, 1776, but it had been inhabited for many thousands of years by Native Americans. Scattered throughout the United States, many petroglyphs, ruins, and continued traditions show the culture of these Native Americans. Now, some of the major cities include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, among many others. It has survived many wars including the Civil War which ultimately led to the eradication of slavery in the country. After surviving the Cold War, the Great Depression, and many other challenging times, the United States stands as one of the world’s super powers.
