The western United States comprises the westernmost part of the U.S. This ranges from Colorado to Alaska. The Western U.S. is the largest region of the country and is the most diverse area of the United States geographically. Included are the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Coast, Hawaii, Alaska, and much more. The Western U.S. is also known for its natural geography including numerous national parks such as Zion National Park, Big Sur and the Grand Canyon. For over 11,000, the area was populated by the Native Americans and included many pre-Columbian trade routes. In the 1860s, America’s transcontinental railroad was constructed, and many Americans living in the West made the trek to the East to settle. It became known in the cinema world as the Wild West. It now has many different cultures marked by newcomers and by Native American legacies.
